ServiceTitan or custom dispatch software?

When an off-the-shelf field service platform like ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro is the right call, and when custom dispatch software pays off.

By Simple To Work ·

Most HVAC, plumbing and electrical companies should start with an off-the-shelf field service platform. Some outgrow it, or never fit it in the first place. Here is a plain way to tell which camp you are in.

What the platforms do well

  • ServiceTitan is a comprehensive platform aimed at larger residential trade companies, with dispatch, pricebook, marketing attribution and reporting. It is priced by quote, generally per technician, and implementation takes real effort.
  • Jobber and Housecall Pro are simpler and faster to start, a good fit for small shops that need scheduling, quotes, invoicing and payments.

If one of them fits how you work, it will almost always be cheaper and faster than building. That is the honest default.

Signs custom is worth a look

  • Your work does not look like residential service calls. Commercial maintenance contracts, multi-trade projects, inspections with specific forms, or equipment you track by serial number.
  • Per-technician fees keep climbing while you use a fraction of the features.
  • You are stitching tools together: the platform plus spreadsheets plus a separate app for one step it does not handle.
  • The workflow is your edge, like a guaranteed response process or reporting your commercial clients pay for.

What a custom build includes

  • A dispatch board for the office: jobs, technicians, time windows and drag-and-drop changes.
  • A technician app that works offline, with checklists, photos, signatures and parts.
  • Customer texts for “on the way” and job completion.
  • Invoices and payments flowing into QuickBooks or Xero.

A focused first release usually lands in the $40,000 to $90,000 range and takes two to four months, then grows from there. You own the code, and there are no per-technician fees.

A middle path

Some companies keep their platform for scheduling and invoicing and build one custom piece around it, like a commercial client portal or an inspection app, connected through the platform’s API where one is available.

Our service company dispatcher demo shows the dispatch board and technician app on sample data. Try it the way your office would.
