NetSuite SuiteCommerce or a custom B2B portal?

How NetSuite SuiteCommerce compares with a custom B2B ordering portal built on NetSuite’s APIs: licensing, flexibility, data, effort, and when each wins.

By Simple To Work ·

If you run NetSuite and want wholesale customers to order online, the two main paths are Oracle’s own SuiteCommerce products and a custom portal that talks to NetSuite through its APIs. Both keep NetSuite as the system of record. They differ in licensing, flexibility and who you depend on.

SuiteCommerce in short

  • Runs on NetSuite itself, so items, customers, pricing and orders are the same records your team uses.
  • Licensed as an add-on to your NetSuite subscription, with themes and extensions for changes.
  • Strong when your B2B ordering is close to standard: price levels, a catalog, a cart and account pages.
  • Customization happens inside the SuiteCommerce framework, so it needs developers who know that framework, and your changes ride along with NetSuite’s release cycle.

A custom portal in short

  • A separate web app that reads and writes NetSuite through SuiteTalk REST, RESTlets or SuiteQL.
  • No separate commerce license; you pay for the build and for hosting and support.
  • Follows your process exactly: unusual pricing, approvals, quotes, reorder lists, EDI and portal orders in one view, or a mobile app for reps.
  • Needs careful integration design so pricing and availability always match NetSuite.

Questions that decide it

  • How standard is your ordering? If a cart and price levels cover it, SuiteCommerce is the shorter path.
  • How different are your rules? Contract pricing, approval chains, configurable products or quotes tend to favor custom.
  • Who will maintain it? SuiteCommerce needs SuiteCommerce skills; a custom portal needs the team that built it or another web developer.
  • What else must it do? If the portal should also show shipment tracking, documents or a rep view, custom is easier to extend.

A common middle path

Some distributors use SuiteCommerce for straightforward accounts and a custom portal or app for one workflow it does not handle well, like rep ordering at trade shows or approvals for large customers. Both read from the same NetSuite records.
